Alex Murphy of Rogersville, a former student of The Dance Factory in Athens, was accepted by audition to Alvin Ailey Summer Dance Intensive in New York, Ballet Austin Summer Dance Intensive in Texas, and Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet pre-professional summer dance intensive program in San Francisco. Alex has chosen to attend Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet Summer Dance.

The program will be held from June 11 to July 8, culminating with a performance at the Cowell Theater in San Francisco. Teachers will include Alonzo King, Arturo Fernandez, Mary Carbonara and others.

Alex is a former student of The Dance Factory under the direction of Susan Fisher. She is currently a high school junior, attending The Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham where she was accepted by audition into the dance program.

While attending ASFA, Alex has studied under Fabrice Lamire, Therese Laeger, Thaddaeus Davis, and others. She also attended the 2006 Seminar on African Dance in New York and the 2004 Dance Educators of America Ballet Seminar in Las Vegas studying under Juan Sanchez and several other nationally recognized teachers.

Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet, founded in 1982, performs contemporary ballet to critical acclaim in the US and abroad. Collaborating with noted composers, musicians, and visual artists, King creates original works that stretch and renew the traditions of western dance.

This year, King was honored with the Bessie Award for Choreographer/Creator, in recognition of his vision and innovations in dance. The company established the LINES Ballet School four years ago, in order to develop the potential of young dancers.

Upon returning to Alabama, Alex will be a teacher at a three-week workshop at The Dance Factory in Athens.

For more information call The Dance Factory at 230-0479.

Alex is the daughter of Jesse and Dena Trammell of Rogersville and Charles Murphy of Knoxville.

Her grandparents are Linda and Dick Kennemur of Athens.
