COLUMBIANA, Ala. (AP) — The Shelby County School Board votes to stiffen the penalties for students who are caught with cell phones in class.
The board voted Thursday night to give students an in-school suspension on the first offense, out-of-school suspension on the second. Then, on the third offense, middle and high school students will be sent to Shelby County Alternative School.
The policy calls for students to store cell phones in their lockers or cars. If seen or heard in class, it will be taken away and given to an administrator.
The changes will be added to the 2009-10 Student Code of Conduct and Attendance.
The board also wants to stop “sexting” in class, the practice of sending nude or seminude photos by cell phones.
