Nominating a heritage tree is easy but there are some guidelines.

For example, the owner of the tree must make the nomination or consent to the nomination. Trees may be on public or private property. A committee will select qualifying trees as they are nominated. An optional ceremony, including elected officials, may be held to spotlight the tree and so a plaque can be placed.

A map will be developed featuring the heritage trees along with the locations, names of owners, significance, and names of those who nominated the trees.

The tree must fit one of the following criteria:

• Specimen tree. Special because of its exceptional size, form or rarity.

• Historic tree. Special because of its age, its association with or to an historic structure or district, or its association with a noted person or event.

• Landmark tree. Special because it is considered a landmark in the community.

• Collection tree: Special because it is in a notable grove, avenue or other planting trees.
