The local actor company, Footlights Community Theater is offering to teach people to tell stories through the art of acting.
The company will hold an acting workshop, Story Time, Monday, Aug. 18 through Friday, Aug. 22.
“The reason that we’re calling it Story Time is because that’s what we’re really doing in the art of theater, telling a story,” said Kristi Condrey, co-founder of Footlights Community Theater.
The workshop will give many students of all ages an introduction to classic literature with stories such as Rudyard Kipling’s “The Cat That Walked By Himself” and The Brothers Grimm tale “The Shoemaker and the Elve,” and many other stories.
Students will also learn about choreography and the fundamentals of theater by participating in games, skits and improv sessions.
“It’s such a growing process for the young students who come in for the first time to experience theater,” Condrey said.
Registration for the workshop will be from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday, Aug. 16, at Julian Newman Elementary School. Registration forms can also be found on the Footlights Community Theater Web site at www.footlightstheater.com.
Tuition is $45 per student, with a 10 percent discount for siblings who attend. Scholarships are available upon request.
Classes will meet at 3:45 p.m. for kindergarten through fifth grade ages, and at 5:30 p.m. for sixth grade and up, Monday, Aug. 18 through Friday, Aug. 22 at Julian Newman Elementary School.
Performances will be held at noon on Saturday Aug. 23. Admission is free and open to the public.
Footlights will also be performing scenes from their entire last season including excerpts from “Oliver!,” “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” and “The King and I” at Art on the Square held in downtown Athens in September.
