Ashley Alexander, 13, took her first art class this year at Athens Middle School. An eighth-grade student of art teacher Jennifer Rosso, Ashley entered the Doodle 4 Google competition, a contest for K-12 students to reinvent Google’s homepage logo.

Ashley, the daughter of Juanita and Don Alexander of Athens, was chosen as an Alabama state finalist for the 7-9 grade category. Her design, reflecting this year’s contest theme “What I Wish for the World,” showed the Earth with out-stretched hands stemming from the continents with signs of peace and love.

“It represents the world coming together and the world having peace,” Ashley said.

She said the contest and class has sparked an interest in art for her.

“I like photography, which is part of art, so this is part of that,” she said. “[Being chosen as a state finalist] feels really good. It feels like I have a special talent.”

Her talents may even rub off on her little brother, Evan Alexander, 7, a student at Brookhill Elementary. He really enjoys drawing a lot and coloring, she said.

Approximately 400 doodles from across the country were chosen by a panel of independent judges and Google employees based on which doodles they feel best represent the “What I Wish for the World” theme. In each state, two doodles were selected in each grade group, meaning that each grade group and each state were equally represented.
