Music review: Gabe Larose
Local guitarist ‘reinvents’ singing and songwriting

Professional guitarist Gabe Larose is not a newcomer to the North Alabama music scene. Based in Harvest, he regularly performs in Huntsville and Madison venues such as Lee Ann’s with bandmates Rob Nelson and Newt Johnson in The Larose Band. He was also a three-year member of the now defunct Full Circle, a well-known area cover band.

Larose discovered he loved music as a boy singing solos in front of his church congregation. His pursuit of music began with piano lessons at age 12 and after “finding rock ‘n’ roll” he began guitar lessons at 16, Larose said.

Larose knew as a child that he would either be a professional musician or a professional basketball player, he said.

Music won and Larose’s vision and groundwork has led him to the release of his first album “Reinvention.” The eight-song CD, produced by Tate Music Group, was released in September. The tracks written throughout his 20s are about “reinventing the influences I’ve had,” he said.

Larose will be the first to tell you that his musical sound is inspired by the past. Combine the guitar ballads of the late Jim Croce, the poetry of Simon & Garfunkel, and back it up with the instrumental musings of Fleetwood Mac or Wings and Larose’s sound takes shape.

The vocals are reminiscent of the likes of today’s indie-rock band The Shins or Coldplay and carry a James Taylor story-telling vibe.

Though many of his melodic inspirations are from singers and songwriters of the past, his sound is fresh and innovative and stands apart in today’s derivatively obsessed pop-music world.

Entrancing songs such as “Stranger Places” and “Unaccountable” stand out as potential singles. While the entire album lends itself to a laid back mellow journey through a youthful adulthood.

In addition to his solo career, Larose teaches about 40 private music lessons a week. He majored in classical guitar performance and music education at the University of Alabama Huntsville.
