ATHENS —

If you’re in the mood for a weekend filled with unique shopping, yuletide fellowship and holiday fun (and who isn’t?), make plans to be downtown for the annual Athens Christmas Open House.

The two-day event, organized by the Greater Limestone County Chamber of Commerce and Spirit of Athens, runs all day Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.

The Courthouse Square will be filled with music of carolers, Christmas decorations and costumed characters. Visitors can take it all in with carriage rides around the square.

Mrs. Claus will be handing out cookies, and Santa arrives by fire truck at 1 p.m. at the Center for Lifelong Learning, 121 South Marion St. Pictures with Santa will be available until 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Don’t forget to visit with participating merchants not located in downtown Athens and be on the look-out for the Christmas Open House Elf.  If you find an elf, bring him by the Chamber for a special surprise.

Participating businesses will offer in-store specials, refreshments and door prizes during the weekend. There will also be a drawing for the Christmas Open House Grand Prize: a custom designed amethyst pendant and earring set from Hobbs Jewelers. The drawing will be 4:30 p.m. Sunday and the winner does not have to be present to win.

Participating businesses include Bennett’s, CEI Bookstore, Cellular Center – Verizon Wireless, Crawford’s Gifts, The Grasshopper, Gray & Holt, Hendricks & Patton- Rancl, Hobbs Jewelers, Limestone Drug, LuVici’s, Pablo’s on Market, Pimentos, SheaLeigh’s / MEWS, Snapdragon Kids, Southern Smiths Home Décor, The Willow Tree, Tin Man Antiques & More, Toodlebugs, Trinity’s Gifts & Interiors, U.G.
