Auburn artist sketches image of Toomer's oaks

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Around 5 p.m. after Saturday's A-Day Game, Auburn fans will gather to the roll the historic oaks at Toomer's Corner one final time, and to bid the trees, believed to be about 80 years old, goodbye.

Crews will remove the famous trees from the campus Tuesday, more than two years after they were poisoned with a deadly herbicide.

The Montgomery Advertiser reports (http://on.mgmadv.com/112I1aM) that Stephen Malkoff will be there Saturday, tossing rolls into the limbs as he did so many times in his college days after football victories and other celebrations.

Malkoff, a member of the Tigers' SEC champion football team in 1988, also is a nature artist.

Now he has memorialized the Toomer's Corner oaks trees for posterity with his pencil rendering, "The Historic Trees of Toomer's Corner."
