Some good apples: Athena League’s Apple Annie golf tourney raises money for charities

— For more than 40 years, the Athena League — a local group of female philanthropists — have been fundraising for Limestone County. The group, made up of 63 active members,  raises money that is contributed to local organizations that provide services to women and children in Athens and Limestone County.

“We also have a scholarship fund that is given to one student each year,” said Apple Annie Golf Tournament Co-Chairman Jenny Lind Johnstone.

The Athena League has benefited local charities since 1972.

For many years, the Athena League sold apples in the community and throughout the schools in the county. Then, 11 years ago, the group started their annual Apple Annie Golf Tournament and Silent Auction.

The 11th annual Bojangle’s Apple Annie Charity Golf Tournament Art and Silent Auction will be held Friday at Canebrake Club.

Registration for the tournament begins at noon.

The entry fee is $500 per team or $125 per player. The fee includes lunch, beverages, golfer prizes and a ticket per player to the Apple Annie Charity Auction with dinner included.

There is a 1 p.m. shotgun start for the four-person scramble, which includes $400 for first place, $300 for second place, $200 for third place and $100 for fourth place.

The Apple Annie Charity Art and Silent Auction will kick off following the tournament Friday.

Tickets are $15 per person and will include dinner, music and items to bid on.

Proceeds from the events will benefit Athens-Limestone Children’s Advocacy Center and Camp Hope, sponsored each year by Hospice of Limestone County. The Athena League will also donate a portion of the proceeds to the Athena League Scholarship Fund.

“The Athens-Limestone Children’s Advocacy Center is extremely appreciative of the Athens League and its annual Apple Annie fundraiser,” said Executive Director Susan F. McCrady. “These ladies do fantastic work for the children of our city and county. The funds this year will be used to provide forensic interviewing, family advocacy and therapy to children, who are victims of prosecutable child abuse.”

Camp Hope Coordinator Dana Pressnell is also appreciative of Athena League’s support. “Hospice of Limestone County would like to thank the Athena League and all the sponsors for supporting Camp Hope,” Pressnell said. “Camp Hope is one of our bereavement services we offer to children in Limestone County, ages 5 to 15, who have experienced the death of a loved one. The money we receive is used to provide support, guidance and encouragement to these children during some of the most difficult times of their lives.”

“Each year we have raised approximately $20,000 for local charities,” Johnstone said about the golf tournament. “Local businesses and business leaders are our biggest contributors, and we are very grateful for their generosity.”

Co-sponsors of this year’s events include CDPA, PC, First National Bank, 306 BBQ, Woodroof & Woodroof Attorneys at Law, OrthoSports Athens LLC and McClary Ford.

“Our members work very diligently each year to raise funds and continue to make Athens a wonderful community,” Johnstone said. “I am honored to have been a co-chairman of this year’s tournament.”
