Red Devil Rock Show: One-day music fest in Elkmont coming soon

By Lora Scripps

ELKMONT — Some might think of Elkmont as a sleepy little town in northern Limestone County, but come August that perception could change — Elkmont is ready to rock.

The Red Devil Rock Show, named for the Elkmont High School mascot, is slated for noon until 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Elkmont baseball fields on Vaughn Street.

The one-day music and art festival, sponsored by Hilltop Arts Society, will feature some fresh faces in rock and a few other genres.

The Banditos, an Americana/Rock collective, will headline the festival. Many know the band as being famously eclectic as members recall the sounds of Creedence Clearwater Revival and perform a tribute to Aretha Franklin. The band is comprised of Timothy Parsons on guitar and vocals, Steven Pierce II on vocals and banjo, Mary Richardson on vocals and tambourine, Randy Wade on the drums, Jeffery Vines on the upright bass, and Jeffery Salter on the electric guitar and lap steel.

Opening for Banditos is Sol Cat, a Columbia, Tenn.-based band that brings a mix of indie rock, funk and post funk. Having performed at SXSW Festival in 2012 and again this year, Sol Cat has become a band with its share of followers. The band’s self-titled album “Sol Cat” debuted in February 2012, and many have said the band has nowhere to go but up.

Also on the roster is local Athens band Spiral Down South, which has previously opened for Alabama Shakes.

Georgia natives Poanna, Missouri musician Riley Downing, and Auburn-based band John and the Conners as well as many other side acts, who will be gracing the second stage, will perform at the event.

“We at the Hilltop Arts Society are really grateful for the opportunity in front of us,” said Hilltop Arts Society founder Preston Pylant. “We are happy to be able to bring more people to our town of Elkmont and awareness to its businesses and the artists who live in it. This rock show is comprised of great acts from all over, and we want everyone who can to come out. We feel it will be an amazing time for everyone in attendance.”

Tickets to the Red Devil Rock Show are $15 and $25.
