Distinguished Young Women: Elkmont senior representing Limestone County

— Brianne Hargrove has made a commitment, a challenge to be her best self.

Although a lifetime commitment, she is joining 47 other young women across the state this week with the same goals in mind.

The Elkmont High School senior is in Montgomery representing Limestone County in the statewide Distinguished Young Women competition, formerly the Junior Miss program.

Distinguished Young Women is the largest and oldest national scholarship program for high school girls, according to the organization’s website. By competing, participants are eligible for college-grant scholarships from about 200 colleges and universities.

Many participants leave the program with scholarships to help them with their college educations, but all of them walk away with friendships, life skills and increased self-confidence, according to organizers.

The program’s goal is to give every young woman the opportunity to further her education and prepare for a successful future. The platform of Distinguished Young Women is the “Be Your Best Self” program, which allows participants to reach out and encourage young people nationwide to make a commitment to being their best selves in such areas as academics, physical fitness, morality, character and social and civic participation.

While in Montgomery, Hargrove will compete in several categories including scholarship, talent, fitness, self-expression and an interview process.

For the talent portion, she will perform a color guard routine to “Hall of Fame” by The Script featuring will.i.am.

Participants arrived in Montgomery Jan. 10. Final competitions will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday at Frazer United Methodist Church.

The winner of the Alabama Distinguished Young Women will compete at the national competition, which will take place in Mobile in June.

Hargrove said she is “very excited and appreciative for the opportunity to represent Limestone County at the state level.”

Hargrove, the daughter of David and Regina Hargrove and sister of Emma Hargrove, would like to attend the University of North Alabama after graduation. Her career goals include photography and graphic design.

Currently, she is involved in school, church and community. She was voted senior class secretary and Who’s Who — Most Courteous at Elkmont High School, where she has been captain of the color guard for four years.

She is a member of the United States Achievement Academy, Who’s Who Among American High School Students and is an All-American Scholar. She is enrolled in the Limestone County gifted education program and participated in the Greater Limestone County Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership program.

Hargrove’s extracurricular activities include FFA secretary, FFA Safe Tractor Driving county winner as well as regional and state finalist, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, FCCLA, Mu Alpha Theta and Senior Beta Club.

She has more than 600 hours of community service including being a tornado relief volunteer, Piney Chapel Antique Engine & Tractor Association volunteer, Camp Hope volunteer, Habit for Humanity volunteer and “Read Across America” volunteer.
