ASU drama troupe to present ‘Glass Menagerie’

— Athens State University’s Athenian Players will present a special dinner and theater performance of “The Glass Menagerie” on Saturday, April 27.

The production begins at 7 p.m., and will take place in the ballroom of the Sandridge Student Center on Athens State’s campus. Dinner will be served by Picasso’s Grill. The cost is $30 per person. 

This production of Tennessee Williams’ acclaimed drama is the inaugural production for the Athenian Players. The troupe was assembled by Athens State’s new assistant professor of drama, Dr. Hugh Long.  Long will also direct the production. 

“We are beginning a rebirth of Athens State University drama with the great southern playwright, Tennessee Williams,” Long said. “ … The Athenian Players (are) fostering a North Alabama theatre culture and community firmly grounded in our wonderful academic institutions of Athens State University and Calhoun Community College”

The cast consists of: Laura Poe, the mother; Jensie Britt, the daughter; Colin Whitworth, the son; and Forrest Johnson, the gentleman caller.

In addition to the dinner and theater showing, stage performances of the play will run at 7:30 p.m. the weekends of April 11 – 13, and April 19 – 20 at Calhoun Committee College’s Black Box Theater. Matinee performances will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 14 and Sunday, April 21. Admission to these theater productions will be $10 at the door, and $7 for students and seniors.
