Community band concert today

— Dan Havely can’t quit music.

He taught it in public schools for 36 years, retired and opened a music store, stopped doing that and has been conducting the Athens State University Community Band for the past 10 years.

The band is set to perform its annual spring concert at 3 p.m. today at the Carter Gymnasium. Havely said his musicians will be performing selections from classical and modern music, including scores from “Les Miserables”, Broadway musicals, the latest Bond flick “Skyfall,” the opera “Aida” and, as Havely put it, “a good ole’ march or two.”

The concert will also feature a solo from visiting clarinet artist Jenny Maclay.
