Part 1 of a series: Earth Dwellers Unite

On April 26, all who live on the planet Earth, and especially those who dwell in Limestone County, are invited to join Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful and the Athens-Limestone Tourism Association in a day to appreciate the planet we count on to sustain life.

Activities will take place from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Big Spring Memorial Park in Athens. Admission and all KALB-sponsored activities are free.

The day will include speakers sharing information on reptiles, bats, and raptors. These presentations will include live animals. Attendees will also find goats, alpacas and a very talented horse named Rosie from KIN Stables.  Make-and-take crafts, games and activities will help with understanding how nature works together, how litter hurts our planet, why recycling is important, and how human actions affect all life.

All who complete an Education Station Passport will be treated to free ice cream. Answer environmental questions and have your name entered to win lots of great door prizes. Enjoy hot dogs and Pepsi while you visit more than 30 exhibitors sharing information on environmental issues, earth-friendly products and services and outdoor activities available in our area.

Earth Day has been celebrated as a day of education since 1970. It was a time in our history when gas-guzzling vehicles were using leaded gasoline, factories were pouring chemical-laden sludge and smoke into our water and air and the country had become a throw-away society. The country’s focus was on political issues and college students across the country were protesting the Vietnam War.

Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, after reading Rachael Carson’s book titled “Silent Spring” and witnessing the oil spill in Santa Barbara, Calif., decided to work on channeling the focus of these college students to a new cause — our environment.  On April 22, 1970, 20-million Americans participated in a national teach-in on the environment, and demonstrated for an environment that was healthy and sustainable. In 1990, Earth Day went global as 200-million people in 141 countries took time to consider the health of our planet.

It is important to the KALB organization to bring information on how we — as individuals and collectively — can make a difference in our local environment through simple changes in behaviors. The Earth Day & Outdoor EXPO serves up that information in a fun, festive atmosphere.

For information on the event, or questions on how to be an exhibitor at the event, contact KALB at 256-233-8728 or email KALBCares@gmail.com.  Updated information is also shared on the Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful Facebook page.
