Going, going ... nearly gone

For the holidays, what do you get the man who has everything?

How about a door from one of the cells of the old Limestone County Jail?

They are free for the taking, said Brent Blackmon of MC Contracting LLC of Fackler, the company tearing down the old jail off Green Street in Athens.

“We are on Day 13 and it should take us 20,” Blackmon said Monday. “We gave up to 90 but we will be done long before that.”

Limestone County is paying the firm $166,333 to demolish the cellblocks of the old jail while leaving the old offices — precision demolition. The offices will be renovated and used by the Limestone County Board of Education, which is connected to the old jail via a breezeway.

“We have these cell doors if anyone wants them,” said Blackmon, whose company demolishes buildings all over the South.

Before you dismiss this opportunity, consider the cell door’s versatility.

Gardening aficionados could use it as a trellis for pole beans this spring.

Barbecue buffs could grill a cow on it.

Engineering types could use it to hang co-axial cable, speaker wires and other electronic stuff.

Bad-boys could simply use it as a memento of the longest night they ever spent in Limestone County.
