Part of a $2-$3 million renovation of the Limestone County Courthouse is nearing completion with finishing touches being put on the grand jury room and district attorney’s office. The reconfiguration and expansion cannot come too soon for District Attorney Kristi Valls who had long ago run out of storage space or adequate office space for her assistants and investigators. Also, she had no room to accommodate grand jury sessions, which require strict privacy.

Forget the 101 Dalmatians. One stray cat and its offspring can produce – under ideal conditions – a whopping 470,000 fuzzy little kitties in six years. Many of those cats end up in animal shelters, and the majority are euthanized due to disease or anti-social behavior that makes adoption unlikely.

Donnie Powers still can picture his red 1967 Mustang before it was flipped and mangled in 1974 by the same winds that nearly took his life.So when events of that night — labeled by history as the Tornado Super Outbreak of 1974 — are recreated for an upcoming program on The Weather Channel, Donnie told producers he hopes to get his hands on the car that “stands in” for his old Mustang.

Dangerous waters

The bond built between a father and son over fishing poles in a boat on the river is immeasurable. They learn they can depend on each other. That is true for Gerald Hooper Jr. and his 11-year-old son, Jay, of Tanner, and Ray Moore, 78, and his adult son, Curtis, of Columbus, Miss. The paths of the two pairs of fishermen crossed in the turbulent waters below the Wheeler Dam July 31 and their lives will never be the same.

This summer, almost 80 children participated in a summer camp. The camp was special. They splished and splashed in the Athens City Pool, played field games, and made artwork during the camp. The camp was similar to many summer camps, the difference, was the children. Big Brothers and Big Sisters of North Alabama in Limestone County held the two-week camp in July for children in its Amachi and Bigs in Schools programs.
