Pearl Harbor show celebrates national pride

I don’t know what it is about the World War II era that brings out this nostalgia. I guess because, at least for me, it’s a time that seems we knew the good guys from the bad.
It was an era when people didn’t spend a lot of time floundering around in gray areas.

  • Back against the wall? Whad’ya gonna do?
When she had exhausted her angst, she would cut off in mid-sentence, stare pensively into the unfathomable distance for a moment, shrug her shoulders, turn up her palms and mutter, “Whad’ya gonna do?”
It was a rhetorical question. She knew there was nothing to be done. She had accepted the inevitable. .

  • Wild boar aggressiveness: Truth or fiction?
“Scientists decode DNA of pigs,” stated a Monday headline. Good.
Maybe we’ll get the answer to a burning question troubling the local feral hog hunters’ community: Do wild pigs pose a danger to the public?

  • Rainy day drifting and other religious experiences
Rainy days were made for drifting. Somehow getting trapped indoors, is like getting trapped inside one’s head.

  • The going gets rough when opposites attract
I was struck for possibly the thousandth time in my life about how two people so vastly different become attracted to each other and what holds them together year after year.

  • Build better flyswatter; they will come
Competition in all segments of a free enterprise system, including medical care, is the only way to ensure the continued high standards that we’ve come to expect.

  • If a raccoon knocks, don’t answer
I’m afraid of a lot of things, but a raccoon was never one of them — until last week.
By now, you’ve probably heard or read about the “gang attack” by five raccoons on a 74-year-old Lakeland, Fla., woman.

  • Lick lollypop, risk life in lockup
We’ve long known that sugary treats can lead to obesity and tooth decay, but according to a British study published Friday, eating lollies as children can also lead to an adult life of crime.

  • Snake in the safe room has me packing my bags
I moved to the Elkmont Rural Village a year ago because I found a really neat house and because it is a beautiful area with lots of wildlife. I have waxed on in a quasi-poetic way in columns past about the flora and fauna, but when it comes to snakes I draw the line.

  • Better take it just in case I need it
When it comes to traveling I am of the Well-I-Guess-I’d-Better-Take-It-Just-In-Case-I-Need-It School. I rarely do—need it that is.
