ATV riders need park
Dear Editor:
We the people of Limestone County who ride ATVs want to know when they are going to give us the opportunity to have fun. They have horse trails and bike trails and they are even trying to get a skate park. I think it would be fair to give us a chance, too. Most of us who ride ATVs have to travel either to West Point, Tenn., or Cullman just to have fun.
We went to West Point this past weekend, and I know I counted at least 30 trucks from Alabama there. It costs about $60 a year to ride there for a family. The ones who ride ATVs would like them to give us a fair chance. We would like to see the fish hatchery open again. All they would have to do is charge people to get in and sign a waiver.
Thanks from us ATV and dirt bike riders.
Sincerely,
Johnny Ussery

Thanks to Butler for protecting Tanner
Dear Editor:
I live in the Tanner community where I love many people. We should have incorporated many years ago but didn’t. We certainly have all the things it takes to make a nice city. A nearby college, our very own nuclear power plant, a wild life management area, the richest soil in the United States, many lovely homes as well as a community motor home area where more than 500 people alone live.
Our schools are outstanding and so are our champion Tanner Rattlers.
We are also noted for the services we provide here at our Tanner schools to the profoundly impaired student.
We are known far and wide for our Tanner Crossroads, where we meet to socialize and eat delicious vegetables. We have our own thriving, busy post office, and now we have our own Dollar General store and just right down the street Brad Stovall’s Body Shop and up the street a world-class nursery.
I could go on and on listing outstanding features of Tanner, including our very own TVA megasite.
It is a precious place to all of us who live here and I want to thank, from the bottom of my heart, Sen. Tom Butler for protecting this very special place from a rock quarry literally setting itself down in the midst of all this growth.
Sen. Butler, you are a very smart man and not only are you protecting the eagles and so many people who would live directly across from this blasting entity, you are protecting our right not to be dusted and to be protected from serious health problems and the very future of the megasite itself.
Sen. Butler, you are just TOPS. May the force be with you.
Sincerely,
Georgia Crumbley
Tanner

Athens High intersection dangerous
Dear Editor:
I have one question for your readers. When one of the students who dart across U.S. 31 north and southbound lanes to get to Kmart or McDonald’s gets hit, who is going to be held accountable?
This is a dangerous situation that needs to be addressed. I have no child at Athens High, my family tries to watch for them; but I assure you — someone, sometime, is going to hit one of those precious, hardheaded children who run across that highway – between cars – thinking they are safe.
Please take control of this situation soon. This very same scenario took place at Grissom High in Huntsville last week. Is the one in Athens going to be your son or daughter? Please consider this. Prove to your children you know a little more than they do – even if they don't think so!
Thanks for letting me bring this to the attention of someone who can do something to correct it.
Sincerely,
Charlotte Kellum

Dear Editor:
Elkmont’s First Annual Five-Mile Yard Sale was a tremendous success despite the rain. Lots of fun and lots of funds were raised for local needs. Thank you to all the participating churches, businesses and homes that provided setup locations.
The Volunteer Fire Department Bean Day, auctions and raffle raised badly needed operating monies. Boss Hill’s chicken stew sold out quickly and provided operating dollar for the Cub Scouts. Rails-to-Trails fundraiser and trail ride had more than 70 riders, despite the rain, and raised monies for future trail improvements. Wagon and carriage rides to raise monies for the fire department were provided by Robbie and Vickie Boyette’s mules, Bobby Taylor’s Percheron and Jane Variengo’s Morgan Horse.
Thank you to everyone who made this day a huge success. We are already planning the next event. If you or your business would like to participate in planning the next one, just call Mike at (256) 423-8860.
A special thank you to The News Courier for all the announcements.
Sincerely,
A. Mike Morelli
Elkmont
