Offended by article
Dear Editor:
I was offended by the recent article about the “Town Drunk.”
Maybe Tommy did have a drinking problem but would never hurt a fly. He was nice, kind and polite.
One day when I was a teenager, I was coming out of Ben Jaffee’s and he was walking down the street and I said, “Well, hey, Tommy.” He went straight to our house and told my mother, “She spoke to me!”
I guess he thought I would shun him in public although he was at our house frequently. He praised my mother on how she reared my brothers and me.
He had a gentle soul and should not be remembered as “The Town Drunk.”
Sincerely,
Sue Looney Qualls

Why not wait for study?
Dear Editor:
If Rogers Group is such a good neighbor, then why won't they wait until all of the ground water studies have been completed instead of acting like a small child having a temper tantrum?
I suspect that they know what will come out of those studies, and they aren't wasting time and trying to get all they can out of the South Limestone Quarry before their business license is vacated and not allowed to extract anymore rock.
The only time they are good neighbors is when everything is going exactly as they want them to go with no interference from the public.
Not what I would exactly call a good neighbor, not by a long shot. The one thing I want to know is what makes them think they are above the law, and that they can just keep on destroying such a beautiful ecosystem like the one at Swan Creek.
I think the correct terminology is greed.
Sincerely,

Not a racist
Dear Editor:
I would like to respond to Lt. Col. Simelton’s letter to the editor last Sunday. I hesitate to continue this discussion because it is obvious emotions are running pretty high on both sides. Many of the people who support President Obama, act like he is a messiah. Another large group thinks he will be the ruin of our great country. I fall in the latter group. With that in mind, I would make the following comments.
My reference to SSgt. Crooks being a lonely man had to do with retired military. I still contend that the vast majority of retired military don’t like what Obama is planning for our country and the military. While I can’t prove it, I believe Obama got no more than 30 percent of the retired military vote. My use of the word “hate” was probably too strong. Let me replace that with “very disturbed.”
I think Obama, like many from the far left, think this country is the root of EVERYTHING that is wrong with the world. If he thinks we are so great, why did he travel all over Europe apologizing for our actions and promising to change? Why did his wife say she “was proud of this country for the first time in her life,” when her husband was nominated? Why did his pastor of 20 years curse this country and blame us for 9-11 and everything else bad that has ever happened in the world?
All these things are minor compared to the real changes (ruination) Obama and his kind have planned for this country. If Obama implements his plan, we all will soon wake up and realize we are living in a country as socialistic as France. He is already running GM and will soon be deciding what vehicles we can buy. His plans for energy (cap and trade) and the environment (the global warming hoax) will cripple our already weak economy. He has promised to wreak the coal and old industries (and all the jobs they represent). If you think socialized medical care is wonderful, ask someone who lives in Canada. And the list goes on and on.
Finally, I take great offence to the suggestion that I and others who voted against Obama did so because we are racists. That is the kind of cheap comment made by those who can’t win their point with a logical argument. Shame on you, Lt. Col. Simelton. I would think a retire USAF officer would be better than that. You can rest assured that I am not a racist. I am also not a socialist, and that is why I don’t support Obama.
Sincerely,
Bruce Wilson
