Letters to the Editor 6/29
We need moral change
Dear Editor:
“Change” is a word Obama is using frequently. Well, we do need to make some changes in the United States of America. One important change we need to make is to get out of the downward trend in our morals and get them in an upward trend. I believe most of us would agree with this.
I’d like to mention some things that are causing our morals to disintegrate.
Drugs are taking their toll on morality. When I was a teenager, alcohol was a big problem. Now we’ve gotten all these other drugs to deal with. What a destructive force these drugs are to our morals. I don’t have to name all these destructive things. You know what they are. We need to do all we can to help people to see the need to abstain from drugs. We need random drug testing for middle and high school students if it’s not already being done. We need to teach our children and grandchildren and warn them about drugs.
To those of you who say, “I just drink a little wine and/or a little beer,” you need to sacrifice that wine and beer so you can teach your children and grandchildren not to drink. Let me ask you this, would you tell your children and grandchildren to drink wine and beer like you do because it’s been so good for you?
The Bible admonishes us to be wise.
The church (all Christians) must lead the way to improve our morals. Ministers need to be preaching against the things that are immoral, such as drugs, gay marriage, gay ministers, couples living together without being married, quick divorces, not honoring marriage vows, and on and on.
Ministers need to preach the truth, which will step on toes. By the way, ministers don’t need to speak ungodly things like we’ve heard recently on TV. This kind of thing hurts the church’s witness.
The church (all Christians) should not support ungodly statements but rebuke, and if the minister won’t repent, get rid of him or her.
We can all be better people. We will never get to the place where we’re as good as we can get. If we all strive to be better people, then we’ll see morals going in an upward way.
I would not close this letter without saying that we all need to be Christians. God will help you, and me, be the moral people we need to be.
Sincerely,
Marvin Whitt
