Job search is a trying experience

Dear Editor:

Through no fault of my own, I find myself unemployed. With a family to support, seeking to reenter the workforce has been a trying experience.

I am a middle-aged man with 25 years in the publishing industry. I have worked as a writer, editor and most recently published a number of community magazines until, without warning, my employer dissolved its magazine division.

Finding yourself with no job and no real prospects is a scary experience. Thankfully, a company severance package afforded me the ability to cover the household bills for a couple of months, but that is exhausted. And, unemployment payments do not go very far in paying everything.

Since April 7, I have been scouring the employment ads and knocking on doors looking for any type of job. At this writing, I have applied for 52 positions.

The most frustrating part is the lack of calls. I have tweaked, critiqued, revised and polished my resume to the point it should be nearly perfect. What I am doing that is not working? What have I not done that I should be doing?

I would make someone a great employee. I rarely miss work. I strive to follow company policies and produce the highest quality product. I believe, through face-to-face contact and conversation, prospective employers would realize how valuable I could be to their company.

I’m not looking to become rich. I just want to be a contributing member of the workforce, enabling me to provide for my loved ones.
