A former Athens city councilman who said earlier he intended to run for the city’s highest elected position this summer has now changed his mind.

David Burroughs, who served on the council in the early 1980’s during the administration of former Mayor Bobby Wood, said he would not be a candidate as planned.

That leaves only incumbent Dan Williams and former Madison Mayor Chuck Yancura as the only known candidates in the mayor’s race. Former Athens Mayor Lakin Collins who some said earlier was interested in running, apparently is not planning another run for the office.

Yancura now makes his home in Black’s Landing which is in the city’s annexed portion of southwestern Limestone County. He served two terms as mayor of Madison from 1992-2000. Yancura has confirmed he will be a candidate and is already campaigning “door-to-door.”

All five Athens City Council seats and the mayor’s post are up for election in August. Of the remaining council members, only Council President Johnny Crutcher has said he will not seek re-election.

Former Athens City Clerk and mayoral candidate Mignon Bowers and former Athens Superintendent of Education Wayne Reynolds have said they will seek Crutcher’s post on the council. Bowers lost in a run-off to Williams four years ago.

Those elected will take office a month late because of absentee ballots sent overseas.

Williams said this will take additional time, pushing back the date for the new administration to take office to Nov. 1.
