Bail set at $1M for Alabama suspect

DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) — Bail has been set at $1 million cash for a woman who authorities say shot herself in the chest during a standoff in southwestern North Dakota after helping two men escape from an Alabama prison. One of the men was imprisoned for the murder of an Elkmont man.

Jacquelin Mink and three others were arrested June 6, after a standoff on a ranch south of Gladstone. The four are charged with conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit robbery. Authorities say they robbed a movie store in Dickinson and fired shots at an officer.

The 25-year-old Mink appeared at a court hearing Monday before Judge Zane Anderson through a video link from jail. Authorities said she was released from a Bismarck hospital late last week.

Also charged are her husband, Ashton, his sister, Angela, and Joshua Southwick, who pleaded guilty in 2007 in the murder-for-hire slaying of an Elkmont man in 2003. Authorities say Southwick and Ashton Mink escaped from an Alabama prison in May and that the women helped them.
