Two Limestone County drug agents along with the Madison County Drug Task Force arrested an Athens native on drug-trafficking charges, seized marijuana and cocaine worth at least $250,000 and confiscated more than $60,000 cash during a bust Tuesday.

Lt. Lance Royals and Investigator Josh McLaughlin along with officers from the Madison County Sheriff’s Department and Madison Police Department arrested Bill Oscar Lee, 36, during a Huntsville traffic stop about noon near the University Drive apartment complex where Lee lived and which Royals declined to name.

Lee is charged with trafficking cocaine, trafficking marijuana, obstruction of justice by using his brother’s ID and possession of drug paraphernalia, Madison County Jail records show. He was being held in lieu of posting more than $1 million in bonds Wednesday night, a jailer said.

His arrest came after a yearlong investigation by Limestone County, Madison County and Madison city officers.

“We got with Madison County and Madison City and have really been watching him closely for the past several months,” Royals said. “We did a lot of surveillance, and yesterday we stopped him with 40 pounds of marijuana, 4 kilograms of cocaine and more than $60,000 in cash.”

Royals said Lee sold the drugs mainly in Limestone County but also in Madison County.

“We’ve known about him for several years,” Royals said. “I went to school with him. We have been watching him closely the last few months. He was one of the top two I was trying to get.”

Royals said Lee was aware Limestone County officials had been watching him and had been staying out of the area lately.

The investigators were pleased with the amount of drugs seized Tuesday.

“There was probably well over $100,000 worth of dope seized and he would have more than double his money once he sold it,” Royals said. “So, we got a quarter of a million to $300,000 worth of drugs off the street.”
