An East Limestone man shot by an unknown assailant remained in the intensive care unit of Huntsville Hospital on Thursday night, according to Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely, who said the mysterious case will require “a lot of legwork” to solve.

Sheriff’s investigators were back on the scene of the shooting Thursday at 16476 McCulley Mill Road, where 41-year-old Kelvin Davis was shot in his side just before 9 p.m. Tuesday while playing basketball in his driveway with his wife, two sons and a neighbor.

The bullet, of an unknown caliber, exited Davis’ abdomen.

“We’re still canvassing the neighborhood,” Blakely said. “Several people said heard they heard a loud noise that could have been fireworks or a gun; they’re not sure. Nobody actually saw anything.”

The area is rural and dark. Blakely said the family was using car headlights to play ball.

“One of the small children said they thought saw a car driving down Ennis Road going east but it was not in a hurry and there was nothing unusual about it,” the sheriff said. “You don’t know whether it was intentional or accidental.”

Interviews will continue in the area, he said.

“This case will require a lot of man-hour time because there’s a lot of people we’ve got to talk to,” he said.

A reward has been posted for information leading to the arrest of the person who shot Davis, Blakely said.
