The Southern Gospel Music Day celebration in Athens will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday at Athens State University and include multiple performers.
Held in conjunction with Founders Hall Jubilee V, the free admission southern gospel concert is held on the porch of historic Founders Hall at ASU. Concertgoers are welcome to bring lawn chairs. The location will switch to First Baptist Church in the event of inclement weather.
Early arrivals will be treated to old standards as played by the All Gospel Million and One Dollar Band, comprised of Linda Hilliard, Nancy Atchley, Norman Hamm, Tim Clark and Jimmy Walker.
After opening remarks by Mayor Williams and Pastor Gerome Hilliard, the gospel music of New Ground, Hearts of Worship, Soul Pickers, Clear Title, The Bishops, and The Midway Baptist Southern Gospel Choir will share the evening.
Mayor Dan Williams, an avid supporter of southern gospel music, has signed a proclamation annually for the past five years to mark the event.
