Thirty-year-old Jan Michael Stack is believed to have died Tuesday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

Limestone County Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Stanley McNatt said Wednesday that all unexplained shootings are investigated as homicides, but there is no reason at this time to believe that anyone else shot Stack.

McNatt said that Stack’s wife, Amanda Stack, 23, was present, but tests to her skin indicated she had not fired a gun.

“We were called to the couple’s home at 27598 Eastland Estates off East Limestone Road shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday,” said McNatt. “Our chief deputy talked to co-workers of Stack’s at a bedliner place on U.S. 72 near Madison and they said he had been depressed and even angry in the last couple of weeks. So much so that someone there was trying to make arrangements to take him to a counselor.”

McNatt said that the young couple, who have a 2 1/2-year-old son and a 10-month-old daughter, had been quarreling for two weeks over her working nights at a Madison restaurant.

“They had argued earlier that morning and when he came home for lunch they got into another argument,” said McNatt. “She said that her husband went out into the garage and got the gun. He took their child’s shoelace and tied her hands behind her back and dragged her into the bedroom.

“She was pleading with him not to shoot her or himself when he put the gun up to his chest and fired.”

McNatt said the couple’s children were in another bedroom and did not witness the shooting.
