Wreck on Hine Street

Published October 07, 2008 10:21 pm -

A lucky break

Ever feel like someone’s trying to tell you something? That may be how Athens resident Alfred Bernard McCullough, 37, of 8688 Snake Road felt Tuesday. He was driving north on Hine Street between Southview and Cain about noon when he lost control of his 2004 Chevrolet pickup. Just as he passed Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, he clipped a wooden power pole in the ditch, snapped it in half, continued through the ditch into a grassy lot a few hundred feet north of the church and came to rest facing the accident scene. The tension in the electrical lines kept the top half of the pole suspended in the air. Depending on your views, it looked like either a cross or a cross-shaped broken utility pole. McCullough was not injured, according to the Athens Police report. He could not be reached at home for comment.
