School board approves extracurricular activity, personnel items, expenditures

In addition to discussions of the subjectivity of the grade reporting system for kindergarten and first grade and the JROTC presentation, the Athens City School Board of Education also approved various expenditures, extracurricular activities and personnel items at the Thursday meeting.

Extracurricular activities approved were:

• Brookhill Elementary first-grade to see the play “The Best Christmas Ever,” on Dec. 17, in Sheffield.

• Athens Intermediate School fifth- and sixth-grade student to see the play “The Little Match Girl,” on Dec. 12 at Athens State University.

• A field trip for Marina Turberville’s sixth-grade enrichment class at Athens Intermediate School to see the CNN Center and Georgia Aquarium on April 30, in Atlanta.

• For the Robotics Class at Athens Middle School to tour the unmanned vehicle facility at Redstone Arsenal Dec. 2, in Huntsville.

• A field trip for Mrs. Kilgore’s seventh-grade science class at AMS to visit the Tennessee Aquarium Dec. 5 in Chattanooga, Tenn.

• Mrs. Taylor’s AMS TAG Spanish Class to travel to Athens Elementary School and Cowart Elementary School Dec. 2 to teach a Spanish lesson.

• Jennifer Kennedy’s Robotics class at AMS to travel to Redstone Arsenal Dec. 2 to tour the Unmanned Flight Vehicle Facility.

• Mrs. Taylor’s AMS seventh-grade Spanish class to travel Dec. 3 to Fiesta Mexicana and the Mexican grocery store.

• Mrs. Taylor’s AMS Spanish class to travel to the Birmingham Museum of Art and a Mexican restaurant Dec. 9.

• The AES kindergarten and second-grade class to travel Nov. 21 to the Von Braun Civic Center to see “James and the Giant Peach.”

• The AES first-grade to visit Santa’s Village Dec. 10.

• The AHS Jazz Band to perform Nov. 21 at the Athens Rotary Club meeting.
