Body of missing teen discovered in Limestone

DECATUR — The body of a Trussville teen reported missing from Huntsville was discovered Thursday near Interstate 565 and Mooresville Road in Limestone County.

The body was identified as that of Michael Thomas Smith, 19, who was reported missing Aug. 31, according to Huntsville Police Department spokesman Harry Hobbs. Huntsville authorities were investigating the case because Smith had been staying at his father’s home in Huntsville. The area where the body was discovered is in a Huntsville annexed portion of Limestone County.

Hobbs said Huntsville investigators uncovered information during their missing persons probe that led them to search in the area. The search was conducted by members of the HEMSI Search and Rescue squad, the Heavy Rescue 1 Team and Huntsville Police.

“Search teams discovered the body believed to be Mr. Smith at approximately 11:20 a.m.,” Hobbs said.

No cause of death has been released. Huntsville police are conducting a death investigation.

WAFF 48 News reported that Smith was last seen in Madison on Aug. 21.

A witness reported Smith had an argument with his father and planned to walk to his mother’s home in Trussville.
