City to conduct water line maintenance Tuesday

— Weather permitting, the Athens Water Department will start work Tuesday, May 28, on old water lines in the downtown area.

Water Department Manager John Stockton said the lines date from 1903 to 1913, and workers need to do maintenance work such as check for and fix leaks and replace valves.

This work will require the partial or full closure of intersections and portions of roads for the next three to four weeks. Work sites will vary daily depending on weather and the type work needed to address an issue, so motorists should expect their routes to be impacted in these areas:

Pryor Street - Between Elkton Street and the railroad.

Beaty Street - Between Pryor and Market streets.

Market Street - Between Clinton and South streets.

Clinton Street - Between Market and Pryor streets.
