County OK’s road projects

— The County Commission on Monday approved a pair of road projects during its final December meeting.

The commission retroactively accepted an agreement with the city of Athens to make paving improvements and widen Linton Road by four feet from Alabama 251 to Nick Davis Road.

The county’s portion of the project is $5,873, or 17 percent of the $34,547 cost.

District 2 Commission Steve Turner received approval for $25,000 in district funds to resurface Estate Drive with asphalt plant mix.

In other business, the commission approved:

• Feb. 21-23 as the tax holiday for severe weather preparedness items;

• Hiring Evan Whiteside as a sheriff’s deputy, pending a drug and alcohol screening;

• Promoting David Inman from corrections officer to sheriff’s deputy;

• Transferring Chris Shedd to equipment operator III in the paving crew;

• Merit increases for Rebekah Davis, Matthew Dean, Martin Evans, David Hargrove, Jamie King, Joshua McLaughlin, Gil Moore, Johnny Morell Jr., William Rogers and Matthew Williamson;

• Selling a 2004 Ford Explorer and 1995 Ford F-150 pickup truck from District 4 through GovDeals;

• 2014 bingo permits for the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 51, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4765 and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 511;

• Closing county offices on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 for New Year’s holiday; and

• Scheduling a public hearing at 10 a.m. Jan. 20 to solicit feedback about the county’s Solid Waste Management Plan.

The commission will hold a work session 10 a.m. Jan. 2, at the Washington Street courthouse annex.
