BREAKING: Crews will sand some Athens streets before dawn Monday

ATHENS — City crews have been instructed to sand slick spots on roads and intersections in Athens beginning at 4:30 a.m. Monday - possibly earlier, and official said.

City spokeswoman Holly Hollman issued an alert about 9:50 p.m. Sunday saying Public Works crews would be sanding in the predawn hours unless Athens Police advises crews to begin sanding earlier.

Ice was already beginning to form on parked vehicles in the Decatur area by 10 p.m. Sunday, as temperatures fell to 30 and then to 27 degrees by 11 p.m.

Motorists should use extreme caution if they must drive overnight Sunday or Monday morning, as wet roads can ice quickly.
