A longtime Athens-Limestone Hospital employee died this morning after losing control of her SUV on Alabama 251, two miles north of Athens.
Tina Patterson Hogan, 49, of Toney, a quality-assurance department employee, was not feeling well and had left work to drive home when she lost control of her 2003 Chevrolet on a curve north of Holt Road about 8:48 a.m., according to Limestone County Coroner Mike West and Alabama State Trooper Curtis Summerville.
"She went into a ditch, and the passenger side of the truck struck a tree," West said. "The airbags deployed, but I don't think they did much. She was not wearing a seat belt."
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
West said he had worked with Hogan for 15 to 20 years.
Although the circumstances surrounding the crash are under investigation, troopers believe speed was a factor, Summerville said.
The News Courier will post visitation and funeral arrangements when they are available.
