Woman charged after firing gun into house

ATHENS — A woman accused of firing a handgun in a building Tuesday night in Athens is now facing a felony charge, records show.

Athens Police arrested Amy Renee Otinger, 36, of 15531 Zehner Road, Athens, on a charge of shooting into an unoccupied dwelling.

She was booked at Athens Police Department and transferred to the Limestone County Jail, where bail is set at $10,000.

Just after 9 p.m. Tuesday, police officers were called to the intersection of Browns Ferry Road and Houston Street to investigate the reported sound of gunfire, Capt. Trevor Harris said.

“Upon arrival, officers found Amy Otinger parked in front of a residence in a blue Chevy Trailblazer,” Harris said. “Initially, Otinger said she was at the residence to get some money back from an acquaintance. However, she later said she had loaned a man money to purchase supplies to make methamphetamine.”

Although Otinger believed the house was occupied at the time of the incident, officers spoke with a person who lives there by telephone and confirmed no one was injured because no one was home, Harris said.
