Teen pilot killed in plane crash

— An 18-year-old pilot died Saturday when he wrecked his single-engine aircraft just north of downtown Elkmont. He was identified as Nick Loggins, according to Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely.

“We got the call about 1:17 p.m. that a small, single-engine plane had crashed in Elkmont,” said Blakely. “We have identified the victim as Nick Loggins, who will be 19 in January.

“This is a tragic event for Elkmont. We have notified the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board, who will be conducting the investigation.”

Blakely said the plane clipped a vacant house just north of the Elkmont Cotton Gin, just off Veto Road. He said he knew no further information as to where the pilot had taken off from or what made the plane go down.

The sheriff said the youth lived near the wreck site. The victim is the son of Ted Loggins, Blakely said, who lives on Compton Road, less than a mile from where the plane went down.

He said Elkmont Fire Department, the Sheriff’s Office, Athens-Limestone Hospital EMS and the Limestone County Coroner’s Office responded to the wreck scene.

“Our jobs are just in maintaining control of the accident scene,” said Blakely.

Loggins was alone in the plane and no one on the ground was injured.
