UPDATE: Shooting suspect remains jailed

ATHENS — A man “grazed” by a bullet to the head remains in jail for violating a protection order following a domestic dispute Friday, according to Sheriff Mike Blakely.

Gary Leon Cox, 51, of 22651 New Garden Road, was booked into the Limestone County Jail at 4:41 p.m. Friday for violating a protection order. Bail had not yet been set Monday.

Friday emergency scanner reports, beginning shortly after 3:50 p.m., said a male suspect was fleeing in an older model Chevrolet and was thought to be suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, which he sustained at 26708 New Bethel Road.

Sheriff’s deputies were pursuing him just outside Elkmont.

Initial reports indicated “multiple gunshots” at the home on New Bethel and that a woman was “bleeding heavily from the hand” and a man was “barely breathing.”

However, the woman, whom the sheriff declined to identify, was shot in the hand and Cox was merely grazed in the head, the sheriff said.

Blakely said the protection order was issued due to a previous domestic violence complaint.

“The shooting is still under investigation,” the sheriff said.
