— A traffic stop near Cedar Hill Elementary School after school hours Wednesday led to the arrest of two Athens residents on drug charges, Limestone County Sheriff’s Lt. Jay Stinnett said Thursday.

Narcotics investigators Justin Flanagan and Lt. Josh McLaughlin stopped a vehicle containing two people near the school about 6:06 p.m., and obtained consent to search, Stinnett said.

“In the trunk, they found an active meth lab, a small amount of meth, syringes and other paraphernalia,” he said.

The investigators arrested Laura Renee Clemons, 29, of 24647 Mooresville Road, and Christopher Lee Smith, 36, of 22036 Compton Road, each on charges of first-degree manufacturing a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, records show.

Clemons and Smith remained in the Limestone County Jail Thursday, with bail set at $56,000 each, Stinnett said.
