UPDATE: Decatur cop facing drug charge resigns

A Decatur Police patrol officer, Timothy Landon Hughes, 24, who was arrested Friday for allegedly buying oxycodone has resigned, according to Decatur Police.

Investigator Kirk Arrington arrested Hughes about 9 a.m. Friday in the parking lot of Garden Suites Inn (formerly Holiday Inn) on Wilson Street Northeast after Hughes allegedly bought three pills, according to court documents and the police chief.

Hughes is charged with one count of receiving a controlled substance (oxycodone), court records show.

“On Tuesday of this week, the Decatur Police Department received information that a member of the department, Officer Timothy Hughes, was illegally purchasing prescription medication,” according to a press release issued following the arrest. “The Decatur Police Department’s Organized Crime Unit, with assistance from the Morgan County Drug Task Force, began an investigation that resulted in the arrest of Hughes…”

Hughes, who was taken into custody without incident, was released from the Morgan County Jail after posting bail of $2,500.

Decatur Police hired Hughes in October 2011.  Since graduating from the police academy and completing the field training officer program, Hughes has been assigned to night-shift patrol, according to the press release.

Hughes submitted a letter of resignation following his arrest, said police, who announced the arrest at a press conference at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
