22-year-old killed Sunday in 1-car accident north of Athens

— A Birmingham man moving back to Minor Hill, Tenn., died early Sunday morning after his car left Alabama 99 and flipped multiple times, said Limestone Coroner Mike West on Monday.

West said Justin Sanders, 22, apparently died instantly of blunt force trauma to his head and chest. West and state troopers said Sanders was wearing a seat belt.

Authorities said Sanders was the lone occupant in a red 1992 Acura found at 6:15 a.m. Sunday about 10 miles north of Athens after his mother reported him missing to the Sheriff’s Office.

West said first responders found the Acura nestled in bushes off the highway just west of Cabbage Ridge Road and near Elk River Bridge.

“He and his mother were coming back from Birmingham Saturday night because he was apparently moving back home,” West said. “She was behind him and lost sight of him (around midnight) as they were going to her residence in Minor Hill. When she got there, and he wasn’t there, a search was started and people were looking for him all night.”

Sanders is the eight fatality on Limestone County roadways this year.
