Man charged with failing to register

Athens police have charged an Athens man convicted of the first-degree strong-arm rape of a 13-year-old girl in 1997 with terminating his residence without notifying law enforcement.

Lt. Charlie Clem arrested Gary Coats, 47, Tuesday evening on a warrant obtained by Officer Greg Parnell.

Coats had previously registered his address with the Police Department as The Country Hearth Inn on U.S. 72 East.

“When Officer Greg Parnell checked on Coats, he was not staying at the motel,” according to the release. “Officer Parnell obtained the warrant for Coats arrest yesterday (Tuesday) and Coats was arrested last night (Tuesday). Coats was booked at the police department and transferred to the county jail.”

Coats’ did not have a bond set Wednesday.
