School board cancels administrator’s contract, fires bus driver

— The Limestone County Board of Education canceled an administrator’s contract and fired a bus driver during Tuesday’s meeting at the Limestone County Career Technical Center.

The board unanimously approved canceling the contract of third-year Career Tech director Mickey Glass effective Wednesday, but he remains on paid administrative leave.

Superintendent Dr. Tom Sisk said the cancellation of Glass’ administrative contract reverts him to a tenured employee, with state law requiring the school system to address his employment status at a separate board meeting.

Glass is charged with first-degree theft of nearly $8,000 in equipment, stemming from an ongoing, three-month investigation into missing inventory from Career Tech.

District Attorney Brian Jones and Sheriff Mike Blakely said earlier this week they both expect additional charges will be filed early next week against Glass.

Sisk said he intends to recommend the second step of Glass’s firing at another school board meeting unless he resigns. He said Glass may also request a stay, which would delay school board action until after the criminal process is complete.

Current CDL

The school board also voted 7-0 to fire East Limestone High School bus driver Charles “Mike” George effective Tuesday.

The superintendent said Wednesday that all bus drivers must maintain a current commercial driver’s license, and George no longer met this requirement.

Sisk did not specify why George’s CDL status changed but said “if he no longer has a CDL, then he can no longer” be employed by the system as a bus driver.

He said prior to the termination, George did have a valid license during his employment, which records show began in August 2003.
