Brooks sworn in for second term

— U.S. Rep Mo Brooks, R-5th, was sworn in for a new term Thursday during a ceremony in the House chamber in Washington.

The sophomore representative is the first Republican member to be re-elected to the Fifth District seat. In 2010, he became the first Republican to be elected to the seat in 136 years.

Brooks garnered 70 percent of the vote in the March 13 Republican primary over challenger and former 5th Congressional District Rep. Parker Griffith. In the Nov. 6 election, Brooks received 67 percent of the vote over Democratic challenger and Limestone native Charlie Holley.

Through recent redistricting by the Alabama Legislature, Brooks’ coverage area has grown to encompass all of Lauderdale, Limestone, Madison and Morgan counties, and most of Jackson County.

“I am deeply honored to have been re-elected to a second term in Congress, and I appreciate the trust that the citizens of North Alabama have placed in me,” Brooks said in a statement. “I kept the campaign promises I made in 2010, and I look forward to two more years of working to reduce the deficit, protect defense, and ensure that our children and grandchildren inherit an America true to the values of our Founders.”
