Trial in Limestone grandmother’s death set, postponed

ATHENS — Although a trial had been scheduled in February for a Limestone County man charged with murdering his grandmother, the trial will be postponed while new evidence is processed, an official said Thursday.

Limestone County District Attorney Brian Jones told The News Courier that although court records show James Paul “Jamie” Pigg, 34, of 18796 Lydia Corey Road, would be tried Feb. 25 in Limestone County Circuit Court, the trial will be postponed.

“We are still processing newly discovered evidence that will have to be disclosed to defense,” Jones said. “The case will be continued to a later court date.”

The case was initially set for trial Dec. 3, 2012, making this the second postponement. However, that is not unusual in a case involving murder.

Pigg is accused of fatally beating his grandmother, Barbara Delaney, at the home they shared on Lydia Corey Road on March 27, 2012. An autopsy showed Delaney died of blunt-force trauma to the head after Pigg, who was reportedly angry about being evicted, allegedly struck her in the head multiple times with a hammer and then shot her, Jones has said.

Authorities did not find the hammer believed to be the murder weapon until November, when it was located in Morgan County. The hammer was sent to a forensic lab for testing.

Pigg was arraigned July 31, at which time he pleaded not guilty to the charge due to mental disease or defect.

He remains in the Limestone County Jail with bail set at $50,000.
