Thousands affected by power outage

— A widespread power outage in Athens Tuesday morning affected 5,467 Athens Utilities customers.

The cause of the outage was a burned “jumper,” which connects two long lengths of wire at the top of a utility pole and insures the continued flow of power from one wire or line to the other.

The issue caused substations in the Athens District, Sixth Street and Strange Street to go down.

The outage occurred about 6:33 a.m. and power was restored shortly before 8 a.m.

A few wrecks were reported around the time of the power outage, but Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said none were related to the outage. He said officers did, however, direct traffic at the city’s major intersections at U.S. 72 and Jefferson and Clinton streets and Lindsay Lane.
