'Good Deeds' bake sale aims to raise funds for community

— There’s a group in Athens that believes a little kindness goes a long way and what better way to share good deeds than through a heap of homemade sweets.

The group “Amy’s Down Home Cooking,” which was created by Athens resident Amy Horton as a way to share recipes, is busy planning a bake sale.

The Good Deeds Bake Sale is set to take place at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Hometown Grocery.

The aim of Good Deeds is to raise money through the sale of baked goods that will then be given back to members of the community.

Horton said the group will give sales proceeds to members of the community the same day by helping pay for groceries, gas or food. “We will work until the money runs out,” she said.

“The idea is to help people that need it,” Horton said. “If they don’t need it as much as someone else, we hope they will take the money they would have spent to do the same thing for someone else.”

The hope is to create a chain reaction of people helping people.

Horton said about 25 members are already on board to make one or two sweets for the sale. She said at least that many have offered to help by donating money or helping sell goods.

The group is also taking up monetary donations. She said at least four people from out of state have sent money because they can’t be here to help. Coincidentally, a woman from Mississippi recently sent $20 in an effort to show her support. The same day she mailed her check, she told Amy she found $20 in her city’s post office parking lot. “See,” Amy said. “That is karma.”

Those who would like to help can contact Amy Horton through the Facebook page “Amy’s Down Home Cooking” or by calling 256-874-5179.

“I felt like if we got together and did this, maybe somebody else would do it, too,” Horton said. “It feels good to do something nice just because.”
