Elkmont banks on goat cheese as tourist draw

— The town of Elkmont is banking on goat cheese as a means of generating revenue through tourism.

Members of the town council on Monday will consider a resolution to spend $500,000 to transform a 7,000-square-foot warehouse into Fromagerie Belle Chèvre’s new goat cheese factory.

The Elkmont-based cheese maker, owned and operated by Tasia Malakasis, will have a grand opening of its new retail outlet on Saturday.

Elkmont Mayor Tracy Compton said he’s excited about the possibilities of the new retail cheese store and the renovation of the factory, and believes both could provide a new Limestone County tourist destination.
