State's police agencies step up school security after shooting

— BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Several police agencies in Alabama plan to station officers at schools this week because of the Connecticut classroom massacre.

Authorities haven't reported any threats toward Alabama schools. But Tuscaloosa County Sheriff Ted Sexton says families were worried, so he will have deputies at all elementary schools on Monday.

Deputies also will be at schools in Jefferson County, and they'll remain until Christmas break.

In Shelby County, education officials say officers will be visible in school buildings throughout the week. Administrators are reminding teachers to keep classroom keys with them at all times and to notify principals if they see anyone without a visitor sticker.

A gunman shot his way into an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., on Friday. The dead include 20 children ages 6 and 7.
