From staff reports
The Athens State University Community Chorus has been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City next June.
This is the first time the group has been invited to New York to be featured in a concert setting.
“The Center for Lifelong Learning resurrected the Community Chorus after a long absence,” said Diane Sauers, center director. “It seemed to be a great opportunity for Athens State singers and other talented community members to rehearse and perform together – much like the Athens State Community Band.”
The chorus was started in 2011 at Athens State’s Center for Lifelong Learning and is under the direction of John Buttler and assistant director Lynette Pope. Beth Andrews serves as pianist for the group.
The chorus has 20 members but hopes to find more talent to increase that number to 50. The Center for Lifelong Learning will be holding auditions for new members. Anyone who has officially registered or performed with the group since 2011 will not be required to audition.
To audition, call 256-233-8260 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Audition times have been set July 13, 14 and 15.
New members will be notified by July 22.
