Jerry Hill seeking 5th District U.S. House seat

Jerry Hill, an Athens resident and highly decorated Green Beret of the Vietnam War, is seeking Alabama’s 5th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

He hopes to unseat incumbent Rep. Mo Brooks.

Hill will seek the Republican nomination for the job in the June 3, 2014, primary election.  The general election, which will decide the race, will be Nov. 4, 2014.

“If there was ever a time in America’s history when our Congress should be working together in order to solve the many problems that our country and its people are faced with, the time is surely now,” Hill said. “There are many things more important than the next election. It may go without saying that there are some moral issues that the political parties will not agree on, but there are many issues related to the economic security and national defense of our country that must be resolved in a bipartisan manner if we are to survive as the great nation that we have been.”

Hill said members of Congress should have done a better job of trying to block the Affordable Care Act rather then try now to rescind it.

“Obamacare is the law of the land and will likely remain so as long as he is the president,” Hill said. “We should have done more to prevent it or made the law better at the beginning.”

If elected, Hill said he would not engage in political games that cause government shut down and inconvenience taxpayers and cost millions of dollars.

“District 5 is very dependent on continuing funding of the government,” he said. “As your congressman, I will not play political games at your expense.”

He quoted one of the Bible verses, Luke 11:17, which guide his thinking: “Every Kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.”
